The story of a TV pilot as it goes through the Network TV process of casting, production and finally airing. David Duchovny writes a pilot about the aftermath of his brothers suicide and has to deal with numerous compromises from studios execs. A comedy/Drama. I have never seen this movie, it played at the florida film festival a couple years ago in 2007, its an american independent film with a few big names. The cast include David Duchovny, Sigourney Weaver and Judy Greer, it was directed by Jake Kasdan and produced by Aaron Ryder. This was not the Directors first feature, he had done commercially successful films in the past. I have no idea where he went to school, he's from Detroit, Michigan. The film was financed by many different people giving money to the project, producers like Judd Apatow and others.
The film played the festival circuit for a little while until it was picked up by a distributor. the film premiered at Tribeca, then went to Los Angeles, Austin, Ohmaha. The film played commercially for a short period of time. It was picked up by ThinkFilm! for its theatrical release then later went to DVD with 20th Century Fox. The film is currently available on DVD.
There are reviews available for the film on IMDB, I could not find the website for this film if there is one, and I could not find a press release online. From what I read the critics seemed to like this film, they called it a "solid film" it was probably just a good film, funny but nothing to remember.
The film grossed a little over 265,000 dollars in theaters domestically, I don't know about DVD sales. I don't think the film ever played overseas except for DVD, the DVD for this film just came out in Germany, the DVD also was released in France and Australia in 2008. I don't think this film was percieved very well by audiences, the numbers at the box office arent that great.
The posters for the film are really good, the trailer was good, it just gave away to much of the story, I felt like I did'nt really need to go out and see the film. The trailer was funny though, but not appealing enough to make me even want to rent this movie.
I don't know what angles the filmmakers used to maket this film and sell this film, whatever it was it was not very good because the film did not make very much money, the film was distributed which is good, but I know it cost more than 250,000 dollars to make, so somebody lost their shirt on this film, I'm sure who. From reading the synopsis of the film, I think the problem was story and characters, the directing and jokes were probably fine but the story is not appealing at all. I never would have made this movie if I was a producer. The director Jake Kasdan wrote the film, it shows, he's better of directing films, not writing them. He can direct a successful movie but not write one. If I was the producer I would have told him that. It's not that the film was terrible, the critics said it was a "Solid film" but I get the feeling that means it's just a mediocre comedy, and that does not cut it if want a return on investment. Here's the link to the trailer.
